Zirconia in Dentistry is discussed by Shelby Township Dentist
Hi I’m Dr. Heather Pranzarone Stratton, the dentist in Shelby Township, Michigan. We see a lot of patients from Oakland and Macomb County. And we’d love it if you came and gave our office a try. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about zirconia, the material zirconia, and how that relates to dentistry.
We also get a lot of questions from a lot of our patients about some of the different dental materials that we use in our office. We absolutely believe that the materials that we put in your mouth need to be biologically compatible with the rest of your overall health, and your body. So we take very seriously any of those materials that we put in your mouth. The materials that we use in this office are approved, I guess would be the best word to use. Its approved by the IOMT which is International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. They have a list of materials, dental materials, specifically filling materials, which are composite, and so on and so forth, that we know are most biologically compatible for most people.
Zirconia is a great material that we use here in this office, it is one of the most biologically compatible materials that we have in dentistry, and zirconia is very, very strong material.
It’s made by a laboratory. And that laboratory then can overlay it with porcelain. And so we make a lot of our crowns with the zirconia and porcelain material for our patients. It’s white. Zirconia itself is a completely white material and so, because of that it’s also very aesthetic, it looks very nice, so when you put it in your mouth it’s very cosmetic material. So our patients love this material. Their gums always heal very nicely around it. I haven’t seen anybody that’s had any sort of adverse reaction, any allergic reaction or any sensitivities to Zirconia itself and so now actually we we’re starting to go with Zirconia is dental implants. The dental implants themselves, the post is now also made out of zirconia. And so a lot of our patients are getting that as opposed to the traditional metal or titanium implants or a crown that has metal in it.
