Xylitol is explained by Shelby Township Dental Hygienist
Hi. My name is Jamie Liepeck, and I’m a registered dental hygienist here at HPS Advanced Dental Care, located in Shelby Township, Michigan. Today I’m going to talk a little bit about xylitol. What it is, where it comes from, and the benefits of using xylitol for your teeth. So what is xylitol? Xylitol is a natural sweetener. And you’re probably thinking sweetener is sugar. It is a natural sweetener and it does have great affects for your teeth.
Where it comes from is you can find it in many plants and vegetables and fruits. So, it’s in everyday things that we eat.
So what makes it different than regular sugar is xylitol is, a five carbon sugar instead of a six carbon sugar. The benefit of having xylitol use in your mouth is that the bacteria in your mouth cannot digest xylitol. When you have the xylitol in your mouth and it inhibits the bacteria to digest it and to produce the acid that can be harmful to your teeth and can lead to dental cavities. Xylitol is a great natural sweetener that is found on in fruits, vegetable, plants and also in products such as toothpaste, mints, and gum.
