Shelby Township Dental Hygienist Describes Proper Flossing Technique
Hi. I’m Suzie from HPS Advance Dental Care. We’re located at 24 Mile, Shelby Township, Michigan. And I’m going to show you proper flossing techniques. Actually I’m going to describe it, because it’s too hard to show you.
So first of all you want to think about a 12-inch piece of floss. There’s many types of floss. You’ll pick one that suits you. Some people like the gliding as a coating. There’s a waxed or unwaxed. And then there’s also some that are thicker to get with people that have more spacing. So the main idea behind flossing is remove the bacteria in between the teeth that you’re floss or that you’re brushing does not remove. So once, usually I recommend flossing then brushing. So first you take your piece of floss, wrap it around your fingers, so you get better control, about this far apart. Then you’re going to, seesaw back and forth in between your teeth. And the most important part, once you, you get it in between, you want to curve it around, like a little C shape. And that’s going to help wrap the floss and give each little side a hug, to get the bacteria below the gum, where your dental hygienist removes. So you want to see-saw it around side, go up and down a few times, and then you’re going to curve it around again to the other side in the same side and go up and down and then move on to the next set of teeth, see-saw in between; curve it around like a little C shape on each side of the tooth once you’re in between. And then you’re going to want to brush your teeth afterwards to remove all the debris to get out. And that’s the proper way to remove all the bacteria in our mouth with brushing, and if you mess up you can stay still and just stay in that position. So you want to make sure we’re brushing two times a day. Flossing at night is your best time, if you can do more that would be great. And the best times to brush are after breakfast, and before you go to bed, in the evening.
