Proper Tooth Brushing Technique Demonstrated by Shelby Township Hygienist
Hi, I’m Suzie from HPS Advance Dental Care. We’re located at 24 Mile Rd. in Shelby Township, Michigan. We’re an all-female practice and we’re going to teach you on proper, tooth-brushing techniques. First of all you want to start with a soft-bristle toothbrush and find the right one for your mouth, the size. You want to do like a full they got full size or compact. So, you just pick the one that will best fit your needs, and when you’re brushing, ideally you want to spend 2 minutes brushing about 30 seconds each quadrant, each corner of your mouth. And you want to be thorough but gentle as we brush. So, I’m going to show you how to do it. Start in any corner that you want of your teeth. You know, apply like a pea size amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush. And what we want to do is, place your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to our teeth. So we’re going to use this, little model here.
So directly on the teeth you want to angle at a 45 degree towards the gums. And do little circles or vibrating action. We do about two teeth at a time and then just work your way around. That way when you at a 45 degree it lets the bristle kind of splay up under the gum line to get all the bacteria and plaque and food that collect on the gum line. You’re going to work your way around and you want to make sure you get all the outside surface is angling toward the gum at a 45 degree and then on the inside, you’re going to have to open up a bit. It’s the same thing, angle at a 45 degree. Find your location and then just a nice massaging circular motion at a 45 degree towards the gum. And when you get towards the front of the teeth you’re going to angle like the toe of the toothbrush. And do a little circular or you can even come up and down, in that motion. The circular’s usually easy, less messy. Then work your way around. And then after we get the insides and the outsides, you want to brush the biting surfaces. So here you’re going to just do a back-and-forth on the biting. So that’s all of my patients, want to do the tops, bottoms, insides and out. And on the bottom front these are usually, the bottom inside, in the front, and along the tongue side where people usually miss. The bottom inside, you want to tip the toe of the toothbrush at this kind of an angle. And make sure you can feel along the gum line. Do little circles.
And like this, you’re going to be missing, the lower 2/3 so this can tip up and then, little circles can get in there. And again on the bottom were going to, 45 degree, and just keep working your way back there, and try and push outright, because usually that gets in our way. And a lot of times we will have to each insert, at different locations in your mouth because where you start brushing you usually spend the most time. And that way if you switch locations you’re also getting it more fluoride concentration, in those different areas. And, be thorough but gentle when you’re brushing your teeth and that will help, last them for a lifetime.
