Pregnancy and Dental Care is Discussed by Shelby Twp Dentist
Hi, I’m Doctor Heather Pranzarone Stratton. We are located at on 24 Mile Road in Shelby Township, Michigan at HPS Advanced Dental Care. I want to talk to you today about pregnancy and dental care. I actually am expecting myself. This is my third child and so I thought this was a good topic to bring up because we get a lot of questions from our expecting mothers, what they should do when they’re expecting in terms of their dental care.
We have a lot of patients when they come in when their pregnant that they have a lot of bleeding gums and they want to know what’s going on. Is there something wrong with them? There’s actually a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis which is basically because of all the hormones that are circulating through your body at that time. It makes our gums very sensitive and because of that they can bleed a lot easier. So it’s very important that you keep up on good oral hygiene including brushing and flossing and even using some mouth rinses. In addition, it is important at this time to visit the dentist to get your teeth cleaned. Because what we do know about pregnancy and dentistry is that periodontal disease, which is gum disease, can be complicated during pregnancy.
If you have this gum disease, it can cause preterm, low weight babies. So we want to make sure that, that’s taken care of so that the baby is as healthy as it can be. Gum disease is caused by bacteria. And so that bacteria gets throughout our bodies and can affect the developing baby. So you know, make sure if you are pregnant that you are going every 6 months to get your teeth cleaned, and make sure that you’re following a very good regimen of oral health care at your home. Saying that also if you’re planning on getting pregnant and you’re not pregnant yet it’s always great to go, to see your OBGYN or your physician, first to get checked up and make sure that everything’s looking good. And also, you know it’s a good idea to start planning ahead on, on your oral health care. So, there are a lot of things that we can do to make pregnant women comfortable in the office, so that when they are getting their teeth clean that they are, being proactive so that it’s safe for them and for their baby.
